MAKupo Sport, Physical Education Council
(MAKSPEC)
makspec Mission
To promote and coordinate youth wellness through sport, physical education, chance to play, health education and outreach efforts in the Chilanga area. These activities are conducted both at the community/village level and through the schools.
Inter-school Sports Days
These bring together students and teachers from the local area and expose the community to a variety of sports and athletics. Team sports and individual events give students different places to excel. Coaching workshops provide teachers with the tools to integrate more fitness components into the school curriculum. The energy and enthusiasm has been contagious and is growing quickly beyond the Chilanga locality as other schools ask to be involved. |
Chance to Play
The goal is to bring health and wellness to the rural villages in the Makupo/Chilanga area by involving them in physical activities that help develop leadership and cooperative skills. For over four years we have been distributing soccer and netballs to village teams, encouraging inter-village competitions and holding coaching workshops. |
Nyumba Ya Ana The Youth Centre provides a meeting place for the planning of village fitness events, a store room for sports equipment and a reading area for members of Makupo and nearby communities. The presence of readily accessible books is encouraging a reading culture among the younger community members. |
Curriculum development
Makspec has been broadening and enriching physical education opportunities for students and teachers by developing curriculum resources and providing equipment and training for primary and secondary schools in the Kasungu area. This includes creation of a Sports Council (made up of local teachers and sports animators) which has facilitated the organization of interscholastic sport competitions, teaching clinics, coaching clinics, acrobatic/fitness events and demonstrations. The Sports Council has also started village-based friendly netball and soccer matches, events which had been non-existent for many many years
